Vue.js / Vue Testing and Debugging
Debugging Vue Applications
This tutorial teaches you how to debug Vue applications. You'll learn about the available tools and techniques that can help identify and resolve issues in your Vue application.
Section overview
5 resourcesCovers writing tests and debugging Vue applications.
Introduction
Welcome to this tutorial where we will be learning how to debug Vue applications. Debugging is a crucial part of any development process, and understanding how to effectively debug your Vue applications can help save lots of time and effort.
In this tutorial, you will learn:
- How to use Vue Devtools for debugging
- How to debug using breakpoints
- Error tracing in Vue.js
Prerequisites for this tutorial are a basic understanding of Vue.js and JavaScript, and a Vue.js application that you can debug.
Step-by-Step Guide
Using Vue Devtools
Vue.js devtools is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that provides a more user-friendly interface to debug your Vue applications.
- Install Vue.js devtools from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-on.
- Open your Vue.js application and open the browser developer tools.
- Select the Vue tab. You should now see a list of all Vue components used in your application.
Debugging Using Breakpoints
Breakpoints are a common way to debug JavaScript applications. You can set breakpoints in your Vue.js application code that will pause the execution of your code at the breakpoint's line.
- Open your Vue.js application in a text editor.
- Go to a line where you want to pause execution and set a breakpoint.
- Open your Vue.js application and open the browser developer tools.
- Go to the Sources tab and open your Vue.js application code.
- Click on the line number where you set a breakpoint. A blue icon should appear, indicating that a breakpoint is set at this line.
- Execute the function where you set the breakpoint. The execution of your code should pause at the breakpoint's line.
Error Tracing in Vue.js
Vue.js provides helpful warnings that can assist in debugging your applications. When a warning is logged, it means something is wrong with your application and should be fixed.
- Open your Vue.js application and open the browser developer tools.
- Go to the Console tab. Any warnings or errors related to your Vue.js application will be logged here.
- Click on the warning or error message. This will take you to the place in your code where the warning or error occurred.
Code Examples
Using Vue Devtools
// This is a simple Vue component
Vue.component('example-component', {
template: '<div>Hello, World!</div>'
})
Debugging Using Breakpoints
// This is a Vue method that we will debug
methods: {
addNumbers: function(num1, num2) {
return num1 + num2; // Set a breakpoint on this line
}
}
Error Tracing in Vue.js
// This is a Vue property that will produce a warning
props: {
size: Number // Passing a string instead of a number will produce a warning
}
Summary
In this tutorial, we covered how to use Vue Devtools, how to debug using breakpoints, and how to trace errors in Vue.js. The next steps to take are to practice debugging a Vue.js application using these methods.
Additional resources:
- Vue.js Guide
- Vue.js Devtools
Practice Exercises
- Debug a Vue.js application using Vue Devtools.
- Debug a Vue.js application using breakpoints.
- Trace an error in a Vue.js application.
Solutions:
1. Install Vue.js devtools and inspect a Vue component.
2. Set a breakpoint in a Vue method and execute the method.
3. Create a Vue property that will produce a warning and fix the warning.
